Viking Shield

Our first visit to the Viking Shield since I believe 1979 saw the Junior Ladies carrying on from their Adur Head success.

Not content with winning Junior 4's by four lengths from Bexhill, the crew of Esther Diment, Gemma Stoner, Ellie Day, Emma Rees and cox Leena Gade went out one race later and won Senior Ladies from Eastbourne by one length. In the junior 4's the crew were lying equal first at the turn before pulling away over the second half of the course, while in the Sen 4's lying 5th at the turn they rowed through four other crews for an exciting win.

The day saw twelve entrys from worthing with the Novice men's crew making their debut and finishing fourth. The J16 girls four also stepped up to a creditbale 4th in Novice ladies after finishing 3rd in the J16 quad.

Unfortunately neither the Junior Men's pair nor Sen Mens Pair managed to find their way round the course unscathed variously taking a windy course or completely missing their turn.

Ellie Day and Gemma Stoner finshed a creditable 4th in Senior Ladies Pairs and would have been more succesful if they had not picked up the same fisherman's line that Martin Holden found in Senior Sculls. Both the Ladies Pair and Sen Scull (also finishing 4th) had to stop for some time to unravel themselves but the Ladies Pair were apparently much less vocal of the two boats in their criticism towards the fisherman !!!!!

Unfortunately due to the Club Capts poor admin skills John Whiteside had to compete in Junior Sculls against the likes of former National Squad members . Nevertheless his time would have compared favourably in Novice sculls which is where Mr Holden should have entered him in the first place.

Finally, not to be overlooked was the achievment of Stephanie Hughes and Caitlyn Homol stepping up from the J16 section to compete in the Sen Ladies pairs and beating two members of the winners of Senior Ladies 4's in the process!
