Junior Section

The Junior Section is roughly split into two, the J16's for those up to year 11 and, as you might expect, J19's for those aged 16 - 19. Depending on age and ability there is some movement between the age groups as well as the Senior (adult) section.

Generally, we accept juniors into our junior section from School Year 8. However year 8s will probably train mainly on the indoor rowing machines and participate in taster sessions on the water.

Club nights for juniors are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.00 until about 6 - 6.30 although depending on ability members may also row at other times and week-ends.

Membership rates are presently £6 per month for those up to Year 11 and £10 a month for anyone else in full time education. Competitions (regattas) usually cost about £12 per regatta. During the winter we may compete at about one Regatta a month while during the summer there are competitions most weekends.

On one or two occasions a year we have week-end trips away to regattas in Kent and maybe the British Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham.

You will need usual sports kit, shorts, T Shirts, a warm top and traininers that you are happy to get wet. In fact you will need to be happy for all of your kit to get wet - especially when we row at high tide. You will also need a change of kit afterwards and a towel. We land train as well as row on the sea so you should come prepared for both !

You also need to be able to swim 100 metres (3 lengths of the aquarena) in light sports kit. You can swim it as slowly as you like though.

As you become more experienced you can buy special rowing kit - if only to show off in! If you are worried about fashion and colours clashing you might be in trouble as our club colours are red with a blue hoop. So it can all be a bit bright at times.

We compete at all the local regattas, plus the South Coast Championships (in Devon this year) and the British Indoor Championships. Last year the junior section raced at Dorney Lake (where the Olympics will be held in 2012) and we will be there again in January.

Finally, many of our Senior members (including this years Women's coxed 4 crew) have learned to row in our junior section before going on to win lots of races and become regional champions.
