British Indoor Rowing Championships 20th Nov 2005 Click here for some photos. Sunday 24th November saw 20 club members set off to Birmingham at 5.00 in the morning and not return until 11.00 that night. Little did we know that we would experience temperatures only seen north of the Watford Gap and 14 mile traffic jams on the way home. In between we all competed at the British Indoor Rowing Championships, well everyone apart from Steve, but perhaps he was the sensible one. However special thanks go to Steve C for stepping in at the last minute to share (in the end he did most) the driving. Like last year the venue was warm and humid and perhaps that explained why we all had sore throats and dry coughs for the rest of the day. We didn’t win any races but calculated that there were 13 Personal Best times, one Seasons Best and one Club Record. Yes that went to Alastair with his time of 6.19.1. I think he was hoping to go a bit faster but it seems quick enough to me! Having done a search on the web site we also had more entrys than any other CARA or H&D club so we must be doing something right. Other notable times were Steve Deans finishing 10th in his section. James Everett just turning up and still pulling 6.53. Martin Holden for improving to 6.46 and special mention to Dan for sitting on somebody elses ergo! We believe Dan is now changing his name by deed poll to D English in order to claim his time. Bearing in mind that Ali had to report at 7.30 and race at 8.30a.m. I thought she did well to compete. Unfotunately the hoped for Bronze medal was not to be - hope pretty much quashed the week before with a nasty rowing imjury so congrats are in place for still getting in to third place even if unable to hold on to it - a medal next year perhaps Not to be undone the J16 girls got into the final of the team race but were pipped, by some very good rowing schools, for third place and had to settle for the dreaded fourth position. Well done Emma, Becky, Ellie, Esther and Toni. Still at least they got Sir Steves autograph. In the J16 womens race Toni came home first for the club, as expected, but had been pushed all the way by Beccy who was only one second behind. Esther pulled one out of the bag with an unexpected 8.55, so we know what to expect from her now. Not to be outdone Emma and Emily also finished in personal best times. Ellie also did especially well racing both in the heats of the team events and very shortly after in the J15 race where she was still able to post one of the many personal best times. The J15 boys,Tom, James, James and Mark, will have their day next year. They raced but had to compete in an age group one year above them (J16) and missed out on a final place by one position. They also raced shortly after and all posted a PB. Tom won the intra club race followed by James B and Mark who sneaked in ahead of James C. Finally another big thank you to Steve C for all the driving - but can you bring a bigger packed lunch next time please. |
